As the African music industry evolves, the major players in that seem to be the musicians. They are the faces of the music after all! Needless to say, there are many people behind the music. Who are they and what do they do?
I had the fantastic opportunity to chat with one of those behind the scenes individuals, Cape Town-based DJ and producer, ProGIsTheName. He has been in the African music industry for over a decade now working with numerous artists that include Kap City, Vuyo Renene and more. Currently, he holds residency on 5FM, South Africa and Coco club in Cape Town. We talked about the lack of glam when it comes to producing and for the most part, producers are always ‘behind the scenes’. How does that affect things such as their potential pay cheques and the ‘respect’ they get in the industry. We discuss how hip hop is very vibrant as a genre in South Africa and the implications, if any, to other genres in the country.
