The name Mpho Sebina may not immediately ring a bell to many but for those in the know, her unique style of neo-soul, mellow music is winning people over. I came across her music on Spotify and I must say I was pleasantly surprised. Botswana has long been a country that doesn’t put out much music beyond its boarders. In simple terms, music from Botswana is very hard to find on the internet for someone like me that collates the best music for a show.
So when I come across someone of Mpho Sebina’s calibre, I am inclined to share. She is young, gifted and soulful. There is something about her. Something Erikah Badu-esque about her. Something Judith Sephuma like but not quite. Whatever that something is, it is very profound. There is a silky texture to her voice which sounds very authentic when she lets her Tswana heritage take over. I have not heard something like this from Botswana, ever. That is why Mpho Sebina gets this week’s Artist Spotlight.
She is definitely one to watch.
